The Ultimate Guide to Qcells Solar Panels: Uncovering The Secrets of Durability and Efficiency

Written by Kerry Mullany

Qcells: a Frontrunner in the Solar Industry

In the ever-evolving landscape of solar solutions, Qcells emerges as a frontrunner, spearheading innovations for a sustainable future. With a rich legacy spanning over two decades, Qcells has cemented its position as a pioneer in the solar engineering sector, laying the groundwork for the renowned “Solar Valley” in Germany

Qcells unwavering commitment to advancing solar technology to optimise performance and longevity, is part of the reason Smart Energy trusts and utilises Qcells' solar products in solar installations.

In this guide, we delve deep into the core principles that make Qcells solar panels a beacon of durability and efficiency, making them an ideal choice for all Australian homes.

A good place to start when highlighting the quality of Qcells products, is looking at the many solar milestones and world-first achievements Qcells have accomplished since their inception.

  • 2004 Set new standard with Q6L 6-inch cell

Qcells set a new standard for the industry with Q6L (156x156mm) 6-inch cell, which provided better performance and maximum utilisation of the module’s surface space.

  • 2008 World-first company to ensure Hot-Spot-free cells with Hot-Spot Protect

Qcells became the world-first company to ensure Hot-Spot-free cells with Hot-Spot Protect, a procedure to ensure that QCells' solar cells are 100% free from hot spots that could heat up and affect the quality of the module.

  • 2010 Introduced world-first full-square mono-crystalline cell

Qcells introduced the first full-square mono-crystalline Q6L cell in the solar industry, which provides additional 3% power output compared to pseudo-square mono-crystalline solar cells.

  • 2011 World-record efficiency of 19.5% in multi-crystalline cell

Q.ANTUM technology set a new efficiency record of 19.5% for poly-crystalline solar cells, as confirmed by the Fraunhofer Institute (ISE).

  • 2012 World-first company to commercialise PERC technology

Qcells began producing PERC solar cells based on Q.ANTUM technology. Qcells was also the first manufacturer to successfully participate in the Quality Tested program of the VDE, a German independent certification institute, setting a new standard for quality assurance.

  • 2020 First solar module manufacturer to pass new QCPV certification

Qcells sealed the first industry certification for a new Quality Controlled PV program from TUV Rheinland. This particular program was chosen not only because it is the most extensive and stringent testing scheme in the PV industry, but it is also the only certification in the entire industry to involve independent and random onsite testing from running production, as well as regular material testing.

  • 2022 Launch of third generation Q.HOME CORE Energy Storage System in Australia

Q.HOME CORE was the first ESS to provide a 15 year product warranty to the Australian market.

Solar Jargon That Matters

To uncover why Qcells solar panels offer first-class performance in durability and efficiency, we have to put our solar jargon hats on for a lesson in tech and science.

(But think of us as that fun science teacher that lets you touch that static glass ball that makes your hair stand on end at the science museum).

We’ll start with Q.ANTUM DUO Technology

Built on proven tech, Qcells’ trademarked Q.ANTUM DUO Technology has significantly raised the bar in product performance throughout the solar industry.

A game-changer when it comes to durability and longevity, below we explore the intricacies of this revolutionary science that make Qcells solar panels exceed industry expectations.

    • Advanced Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) Technology

Solar cells passively absorb sun rays to convert them into solar electricity. PERC technology in Qcells solar panels increases the absorption of sun rays by using both sides of the solar cell. By optimising the rear side, it increases the overall solar electricity generation and solar panel efficiency.

How? … Qcells Power Reflector Layer.

    • Power Reflector Layer

This special nano coating on the rear surface of the solar cell mirrors sun rays, sending them back through the cell to generate more electricity. Combined with laser-fired contacts, which create a direct path for electrical current to flow, the generation of solar power is faster and more effective.

This is particularly beneficial to those living in areas of Australia that experience more rainfall or snow, and might need optimal solar panel efficiency to account for reduced sunlight.

    • Multi Busbars Technology

Busbars are the little lines you see, when looking close up, on a solar panel.  Their job is to capture electrons needed to produce an electrical current. Reduced distance in between the busbars and adding additional busbars results in less congestion for the electrical current to flow. This in turn reduces resistive losses that can reduce solar panel efficiency. This tech improvement mastered by Qcells results in a 2% power increase from each panel.

    • Half-cell Technology

The further electrical currents have to flow, the weaker the charge gets. By halving the size of each solar cell, the pathways for currents to travel is also halved. This enhances the energy output and solar panel efficiency, resulting in a 3% increase in power.

And though 3% doesn’t sound like a lot, when you are cracking the air con, just remember whilst those panels sun bake on the roof, that extra 3% of gusto will be keeping you and your bills icy cool.

    • Wire Interconnection

Standard solar panels use flat ribbons to transmit electricity which can cause shading within areas of the panel. Qcells solar panels use wiring that decreases shading losses by 75% and increases power by 2.5%.

Four-Level Quality Assurance Program

If you are looking for peace of mind when it comes to quality assurance, how does a Four-Level Quality Assurance program, three times stricter than the current global standards, including over 40 individual tests sound?

With an average lifespan of 25 years, quality is an essential consideration when investing in solar. Especially with a climate as wild as here in Australia.

Making sure your panels are built to withstand heat waves hot enough to fry an egg on the car bonnet, and thunderstorms strong enough to shake the house, is pretty important.

The engineers at Qcells ensure that your investment is built to last, and they've certainly put their panels through the ringer to prove it.

Level 1 - Initial Certification

All solar panels from all manufacturers must pass this basic level of certification. It guarantees electrical safety and proper construction and obviously Qcells aced this test.

This level of advanced testing ensures that the solar cells are functioning and yielding the expected amount of power even with environmental stresses at play.

Passing this level with flying colours, rest assured Qcells solar cells are trustworthy, safe and reliable long-term.

Anti PID Technology

Potential Induced Degradation (PID) in solar panels, caused by voltage, high temperatures and humidity, can significantly reduce solar power output. Qcells mitigates this through advanced technologies and materials, ensuring long-term reliability and high energy yield as part of their quality assurance program.

Anti LeTID Technology

Light and Elevated Temperature Induced Degradation (LeTID) can significantly damage the power production of solar cells. Qcells was the first company to observe LeTID effects, and the first to come up with a solution to alleviate it back in 2015.

Hot-Spot Protect

A hot spot is a localised area where the temperature of a cell rises significantly in comparison to surrounding cells. There are a number of reasons this can occur including manufacturing defects and uneven electrical properties between cells. One hot-spot can lead to continual yield loss and decreased panel efficiency.

Solar panels are on the roof sun baking day in, day out for 25+ years, which is why Qcells have been thoroughly inspecting their solar cells using infrared camera scanning since 2008.

Qcells is the first solar module manufacturer in the industry to pass TÜV Rheinland’s new Quality Controlled PV (QCPV) certification; the most thorough testing program in the industry.

Developed by TÜV Rheinland, QCPV is not only the most extensive and strictest program to date, but is also the only certification in the entire industry to involve independent and random onsite testing by external experts, and subject to continuous material and component audits.

It’s nice to know that your solar panels come from a manufacturer with consistency.

The final inspection is 3x stricter than standard global testing within the solar industry. As their own biggest critic, you can probably tell that Qcells are perfectionist from start to finish, guaranteeing product stability.
